Initiated in 1995, In But Free has an objective of promoting HIV/AIDS prevention in Zambian Prisons, using inmates and officers as key players in the intervention. There are currently 20,000 inmates in Zambia.

Since its inception, the organization has provided evidence based interventions for the better health and welfare of communities in Zambian correctional facilities with a focus on achieving full protection for prisoners against HIV AIDS, associated infections and mental illnesses. This is being through an inclusive innovative and credible partnership with affected communities, civil society, the general public, the criminal justice and public health systems and not forgetting the financial support from our cooperating partners.

“It is important to recognize that any prison environment is greatly influenced by both prison staff and prisoners. Both groups should therefore participate actively in development and applying effective preventive measures, in disseminating relevant information and in avoiding discrimination” WHO 1993
